Driving Standards Agency - Show me, Tell me Test Questions
Prior to your practical driving test, the examiner will ask you two
questions in relation to vehicle checks. The
questions will be taken from the list below.
Think you know the answers? Click on the questions to find out!
Open the bonnet. Identify dipstick/oil level indicator. Describe
checking of the oil level against the minimum/maximum marks.
Note: This check should be done when
the vehicle is parked on level ground and when the engine has not
recently been used.
If the steering becomes heavy the system may not be working properly. Before
starting a journey two simple checks can be made. Gentle pressure on the steering
wheel maintained whilst the engine is started, should result in a slight but
noticeable movement as the system begins to operate. Alternatively, turning
the steering wheel just after moving off will give an immediate indication
that the power assistance is functioning.
Note: (Although a “show me” question, examiners should recognise
and accept that candidate’s answers may involve a significant proportion
of explanation rather than demonstration).
Open the bonnet. Identify high/low level markings on the header tank where
fitted, or radiator filler cap. Describe how to top up to the correct level.
Note: Extreme care is required if the radiator cap is removed when the engine
is hot. Never fill a hot radiator with cold water. If the system is topped
up with water the strength of the anti-freeze mix will require adjusting later.
Switch on ignition. Operate left/right indicators and walk around car to check
that they are working. Alternatively press hazard light switch and all indicators
are operated at once.
Turn on light switch and walk round vehicle to check that lights are all
working.
Note: Ignition must be switched on for dipped/high beam headlights to work.
Manufacturer’s handbook for the car. Use a reliable pressure gauge to
check pressure. Adjust by inflating/deflating tyre. Remember to replace valve
dust cap. Don’t forget the spare.
Note: Tyre pressures should be checked when cold. Tyre pressures should be
increased if vehicle is to be used fully loaded.
Tread should be a minimum of 1.6 mm across the central ¾ of the breadth
of the tyre and around its entire circumference. Also check for cuts and
bulges in the sidewalls.
